Baja (MEXICO) Vanlife - La Ventana (Kite Boarding) // La Paz B.C.S.

Описание: Welcome to Season 4! Our Baja Mexico #Vanlife Series. We are Wiley & Dre and in this series we take our Van, Uhuru, and our Siberian Husky, Maisha international to Baja, Mexico. This season we wanted to explore some uncharted territory in our van and cross international borders for the first time!

Welcome back! In today's episode we take you to La Ventana which in English translates to the window. La Ventana is known to be a great place learn and enjoy wind sports! In particular, kite boarding!

The main reason we wanted to go to Baja was to learn how to kite board. We started with our instructor having us blow up the kite and then a quick walk up to the beach to the launch spot. There we connected the bar lines to the kite which is important to make sure your lines aren't twisted and securely attached to the kite. Then we helped him launch the kite and learned how to safely land the kite based on the wind direction so it doesn't blow down the beach. With a little bit more instruction we were back in the water tethered to our instructor to learn how to dip the kite in the power zone of the wind window. Which helps you get out the water and will increase your speed when kiting. At this point you are given a board and body drag once more with the board in your hand, which means you need to control your kite with one hand now.

Then you get to water starts. Just seems like it should be easy. Dip the kite into the power wind window without pulling on the bar and start cruising! This was my most frustrating couple days. Crash after crash after crash and sometimes crashing the kite into the water. Eventually, you get it and everything clicks into place and start wonder why it would so difficult. Water starts were easy for Wiley but as a beginner you have the classic what kiters call "poop stance"! It takes a while to feel comfortable enough to get out of the poop stance but this also is a clear indication to other kiters that you are new to the sport and to give some space!

Each day our skills slowly improved giving us some more confidence.
The good thing about this bay is that even if you have a kite issue and no one is there to help you. Worst case you float down the bay and eventually you end up at Baja Joes and not out to sea like some other areas around the world. Which make it a nice place to learn to kite.

The day after the wind picked up and it was a perfect day. Our form getting better than the previous day, less poop stance, and longer rides inland and out to sea. Working on sending the kite down wind and up wind to try to remain in the same area to prevent having to walk upwind on the beach and then have to relaunch the kite. We were feeling pretty good about our progress. Wiley even got to the point that he started working on transitions and the last week we felt confident enough to buy our own gear and break loose from the kite school. At this point we finally felt like we were officially "kiters".
