Banana petal chutney is a delicious and nutritious South Indian-style condiment made from banana flower petals (also called banana blossoms or vazhaipoo in Tamil). It has a slightly floral, mildly bitter taste that pairs well with, spices, and tamarind. This chutney is rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential nutrients, making it both a tasty and healthy accompaniment to rice, dosa, or idli.
Recipe for Banana Petal Chutney
Ingredients:
5 banana flower petals (chopped)
4 dried red chilies
1 tablespoon tamarind (small piece or paste)
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
Salt to taste
Water (as needed)
For Tempering (Optional):
½ teaspoon mustard seeds
4 crushed garlic cloves
1 1tbspoon oil
Instructions:
1. Cleaning the Banana Petals:
Separate the banana flower petals and remove any hard parts (the small thread-like stamens).
Finely chop the petals and soak them in water. Drain before use.
grind with masala.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and garlic. Add the masala and masala water.
Cook for 10 minutes .
Serving Suggestions:
Serve with hot kanji, dosa, idli, or even chapati.
A drizzle of sesame oil on top enhances the taste.
