Gujje Chana Curry is a delicious coastal Karnataka dish made with tender jackfruit (gujje) and chickpeas (chana). It has a unique blend of flavors, combining the earthy taste of black chickpeas with the mild sweetness of tender jackfruit, all cooked in a rich coconut-based masala.
Ingredients
For the Curry:
1/4 cup chickpeas (soaked overnight)
1 cup tender jackfruit (gujje), chopped
Seasoning:
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp asafoetida
1 red chili
1 sprig curry leaves
2 tbsp oil (preferably coconut oil)
Salt to taste
For the Masala Paste:
½ cup grated coconut
1 tbsp coriander seeds
4-5 dried red chilies (adjust to taste)
1/4 tsp black peppercorns
4 garlic cloves
1 onion
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
Instructions
Cook Black Chickpeas & Jackfruit
Pressure cook the soaked black chickpeas with some salt and water for about 4-5 whistles until soft.
Separately, cook the tender jackfruit with turmeric and water until soft. Drain and set aside.
Prepare the Masala Paste
Heat a pan and dry roast coriander seeds, black peppercorns, and dried red chilies until aromatic.
Blend these roasted spices with grated coconut, tamarind paste, garlic, and a little water into a smooth paste.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, and let them splutter. Add asafoetida, red chili
Add curry leaves
Cook the curry:
Add Jackfruit and chana in a vessel
Stir in the prepared masala paste and cook for 3-5 minutes Adjust consistency with water if needed. Add jaggery.
Add salt to taste and simmer for a few more minutes until flavors blend. Add seasoning
Serving
Serve hot with steamed rice, chapati, or neer dosa.
