Every summer, shellfish farmers along the Washington coastline contend with an abundance of Ulva, a native seaweed that grows thick and heavy in the tidelands. Left alone, it can smother life underneath. Removing it creates another problem for farms like Baywater Shellfish — what to do with hundreds of pounds of unwanted seaweed.
A team from the University of Washington aimed to test if Ulva could work as a soil amendment, and, if successful, develop a market for shellfish farmers to sell excess seaweed to farmers on land. Led by Sarah Collier, a UW assistant professor of environmental and occupational health sciences, the Blue Carbon, Green Fields project was in its second year when the USDA froze its funding, grinding the project to a halt.
