Can science help in making better habitat for salmon?
Salmon stocks throughout the Pacific Northwest have been devastated by development and warming river temperatures. And while salmon like cool water, the temperature of the rivers they run is trending up. But getting temperature measurements up and down the length of a river, sometimes in remote places, can be difficult.
Now, there is a new river temperature measuring tool. UW PhD student George Darkwah and a team from the University of Washington made a computer program that can extract river temperatures using NASA satellite images in combination with historic physical temperature readings. The tool, called THORR (for Thermal History Of Regulated Rivers) allows tribes, scientists and resource managers to look at river temperatures remotely, with information going back more than four decades.
