STORYLINE:

The leader of Pakistan's Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party - which supports the Taliban - arrived in Quetta on Tuesday to a rapturous welcome from a crowd of thousands.

Maulana (Mullah) Fazlur Rehman arrived early in the morning and thousands lined his route and marched behind him as he headed towards a party rally where he's expected to give an address.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam rally in the southwest border city was also aimed at denouncing the government's decision to cooperate with the United States.

Several thousand people, some waving sticks, marched through the narrow, dusty streets, shouting: "Afghanistan, graveyard of America" and "Any attack on Afghanistan is an attack on Islam".

They waved the black-and-white party flag, which has become almost as popular in Pakistan as the national flag.

Foreign journalists in the city were confined to their hotel during the rally - officials said they were being kept inside for their own safety.

Police in riot gear watched over the demonstration and shops in the area were shut up tight.

Pakistan's president all but conceded defeat in efforts to mediate with the Taliban.

General Pervez Musharraf told the British Broadcasting Corporation that a US military strike appeared likely.

Many Afghans live in Pakistan's Baluchistan province and have strong sympathies with their neighbours and the ruling Taliban.

Maulana (Mullah) Fazlur Rehman has in the past called for Pakistanis to rise up and help defend Afghanistan in the event of a US-led attack on the Taliban.
