STORYLINE:

Supporters of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Party of Islamic Clerics) gathered outside a mosque in Peshawar on Sunday to protest at the arrest of their leader, Maulana Fazal-ur Rehman.

There followed a march through the streets ending in a huge rally in this northwestern Pakistani city near the Afghan border.

Earlier on Sunday, Rehman had been placed under house arrest to keep him from leading more protests against the U-S campaign to apprehend Osama bin Laden, his party and police said.

But a J-U-I spokesman promised further countrywide protests at the arrest, and insisted the authorities' objective of stopping the protests would not be fulfilled.

Rehman is a prominent Pakistani cleric who supports Afghanistan's Taliban and heads the J-U-I, a pro-Taliban radical Islamic group.

The J-U-I has played a central role in the almost daily demonstrations throughout the country, protesting against threatened U-S military strikes.

Heavily armed police and paramilitary troops were stationed at his house in Dera Ismail Khan, around 200 kilometres (120 miles) south of Peshawar, according to Abdul Jalil Jan, the deputy secretary of the group.

Dawal Khan, senior superintendent of police, said Rehman was placed under indefinite house arrest on orders of the provincial government.

He gave no other details.

The move came one day after Rehman led a noisy, four-hour protest by several thousand people on Saturday in Peshawar.

During the rally, Rehman had told the crowd that if the United States tried to land planes in Pakistan, they would be destroyed.

In the southwestern city of Quetta, the group's central committee appointed Maulana Abdul Ghani as the acting leader of the J-U-I until Rehman can resume his duties.
