In the decades before WWI, people moved to and within Canada for many reasons—hope, opportunity, and sometimes force. In this Grade 8 history lesson, students will explore these journeys through the eyes of someone who lived them.
Students will write three diary entries from the perspective of a historical character—immigrant, homesteader, Indigenous child in a residential school, Chinese railway worker, Black settler, or suffragist—capturing life before, during, and after a major journey or change. Each entry will weave in historical facts, emotions, and personal perspective.
📚 Aligned with Grade 8 Ontario History (1890–1914) and Language Curriculum
✏️ Writing focus: Historical fiction + first-person narrative
🗝️ Key terms: immigration, discrimination, settlement, suffrage, resilience
Watch now to imagine Canada’s history through the voice of someone who lived it.
