Abstract: This Seminar discusses the preliminary findings from a building damage reconnaissance mission conducted following the Hualien Earthquake in Taiwan. This mission, a collaborative effort involving researchers from Aotearoa New Zealand, Japan, and Taiwan, focused on evaluating the effectiveness of retrofitted buildings and the associated retrofit policies. The insights gained are intended to inform and enhance ongoing efforts to develop retrofit guidelines in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Bios: Alex Shegay received his Bachelor of Engineering (hons) and Ph.D from the University of Auckland. Alex is currently a lecturer at the University of Auckland with research interests in reinforced concrete and base isolated structures.
Ken Elwood is a Professor at the University of Auckland, as well as currently holding the position of Chief Engineer for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tu Ake.
