I don't know if you are like me, but my elbows and shoulders often hurt after holding mitts. I guess it’s the years of holding for big, strong fighters who hit really hard.
It’s exhausting holding pads for fighters for long periods of time, both mentally and physically, and I find that sometimes I fall into a rut when I’m holding pads for a long time, which can make the experience repetitive for the martial artist.
Well, I've just found an alternative to pads. They’re called striking sticks. Essentially, they work the same way as pads do for the fighter, but they take stress off the pad holder’s joints, making it easier to be an effective training partner for much longer.
You can use these sticks to do everything you would normally do with pads but you DON’T TAKE ANY IMPACT, which is great if you have to hold pads all the time like I do. As an instructor, I often have to hold pads for a long time, and my coaching can definitely start to suffer after a while. With these striking sticks, I can hold the sticks for longer and coach more students without burning out or getting injured.
I really love how many alternative skills I can teach with these tools, and I feel like it gives athletes a chance to really explore something new and exciting. I think the innovation and creativity good tools encourage can help athletes break out of plateaus and address weaknesses in their skill sets.
When athletes use pads all the time with the same instructor, even the best pad holder becomes predictable. By adding new tools into the training session, the fighter can experience new and different drills that can help him or her improve dramatically in a short period of time.
I’ve been focusing on how to use striking sticks most effectively as an instructor, but one of the best parts about these tools is that they can be used by advanced athletes and beginning athletes alike. I have found that the striking sticks are the most effective when they’re not jabbed at the fighter’s face.
These are great tools that can be used for fighters who are struggling to learn how to slip, and they force the fighter to keep his hands up much more than pads do. But I’ve also found that striking sticks can be used for far more than learning how to slip and cover: I’ve designed striking and boxing combinations, as well as head movement drills specific boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, and MMA practise.
I have just filmed a new video on how to use Striking Sticks. My new striking stick program and system has been extensively tested with boxers, kickboxers, and MMA fighters at a number of different levels. The system I developed includes:
-How to hold the striking sticks
-The new improved design of striking sticks -Basic techniques
-Striking combinations
-Boxing combinations
-Covers & counters
-Head movement basics
-Snap back series
-Shoulder rolling
-Scoop & counter -Trapping techniques -Footwork drills
I hope you enjoy these striking stick training drills as much as I do!
