A new exhibition dedicated to Hawaiian cultural artefacts and artistry has opened at the British Museum in London on Monday (January 12).
"Hawai’i: a kingdom crossing oceans" marks the 200 year anniversary of the visit of Hawaiian King Liholiho (Kamehameha II) and Queen Kamamalu to London with a Hawaiian royal delegation that sought an alliance and protection from Britain’s King George III. The exhibition has 150 items on display which included feathered capes, headdresses and weapons or war.
"In this exhibition, there is a certain number of ahu'ula or feathered cloaks which are really important in Hawaii. They signify status. They could protect the bearer spiritually. They signify their identity as chiefs," Alice Christophe, curator and Head of Oceania at the British Museum, told Reuters on Monday.
"In this show, we have this particular cloak here, which was sent by the first king of Hawaii, Kamehameha I, to the British Crown as a gift in 1810, together with a letter asking for support and protection from the British Crown," she said.
"Hawai’i: a kingdom crossing oceans" exhibition is open to the public from January 15 and runs until May 25.
