In 1993 the AFL's racial undertones came to the surface; Nicky Winmar and Gilbert McAdam made their famous stance before off-field comments and controversies followed. So when the might of the Collingwood Football Club travelled to Darwin at the start of 1994 it was a step towards reconciliation and a highly anticipated contest against a flashy Aboriginal All Stars team, coached by the Territory's Maurice Rioli and captained by Michael 'Magic' McLean, enthralled the crowd. The NT's newest AFL star, Nathan Buckley was returning to his old stomping ground at Marrara but playing for the other side in what was his first game for the Magpies, while Cyril Rioli did what he did best and put on a show with his brothers and teammates.
