Backcountry Camping at Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas

The backcountry camping area is along the equestrian trail at the southernmost tip of Park Road 5. Park in the lot opposite the equestrian camp and take the equestrian trail at least 1 mile in before setting up camp. Stay within eye-shot of the trail so your camp is easy to find should there be an emergency and you need to be located by park officials.

Bring a proper backcountry food storage system as there are numerous raccoons, wild hogs, and smaller critters that would love an easy snack. Do this to protect them as much as you do to protect yourself. Once an animal gets food from a human it can become a nuisance to future campers - an issue that can lead to bleak outcomes for the animal.

Before you leave the park after your backcountry stay, be sure to check out at the park office so they know you have made it out safe and sound.
