As they pull the helmet off, Ryman and Steely Pate both let out a gasp. The newly-made knight’s hand flies to his face while the grizzled blacksmith appears ashen.

Steely Pate: Gods be god.

Baelor blinks and turns to them, his expression confused. His skull is crushed at the back from Mekkar’s mace. The back has caved in and made a dent. It’s a miracle that it remains intact and hasn’t shattered entirely.

The prince’s hands move to try to touch it, but Ryman grabs him first, shaking his head. He warns him not to touch it and then shouts for Egg to call a maester. The child goes running off as Baelor begins to lose balance.

He tries to move one foot forward, but it buckles and nearly collapses. Dunk and Steely Pate barely catch him and soon begin to carry him off to the prince’s chambers.

Later, Egg arrives with the maester as word begins to spread of what happened. The festive mood of the tourney burns away like dragonfire as everyone mutters nervously about the prince. Lords send their maesters to help, and smallfolk offer their prayers.

But more darkly, some of them mutter about the nature of the injury. It could only have been caused by Mekkar’s mace. He was Baelor’s primary opponent. They question whether such an attack was intentional in order to secure his position in succession. They worry about what Prince Valarra would be next.

Yet the prince does not seem to care. His attention remains fixed on his father, standing outside his chambers and pacing the ground while the maesters work. The situation they find themselves in is delicate.

The mace caved in his skull, stopping just short of shattering and smashing into his brain entirely. They do what they can to try to treat this injury, but many worry that such a blow can have permanent damage. However, all they can do so far is provide him with milk of the poppy to dull the pain as they work.

For days, they remain shut in the chambers, not allowing anyone to see what they are doing. There are moments when they fear the prince will be lost. Though the tourney ends days before, many lords and knights remain behind to keep watch over the prince.

At long last, the doors slowly open, and a bloodied maester arrives. He looks as though he hasn’t slept in days, but there is a smile on his face as he announces that the worst has passed. It is likely Prince Baelor will wake up soon.

The first to visit him are Ser Duncan and Valarr, whom the prince personally calls for both to kneel before the Hand, but Baelor bids them to ride. His expression is pained, and the color has left his face, but he manages to smile.

Valarr: Lord Ashford is calling for a feast of celebration to honor your recovery, father.

Baelor: Without any more jousts, I hope. I think I’ve seen enough of that for a lifetime. Laughs. What? Too soon?

Valarr: Father, I thought we were going to lose you.

Dunk: It should have been me, your grace. That blow, it was mine to take.

Baelor: Perhaps…what was it your master used to say? “Thick as a castle wall,” that certainly would have been useful. But enough of it, I am not here to explore the depths of that theory of yours. I am here because you said to me you would be my man, Ser Duncan the Tall.

Dunk: I did, and I meant it. Allow me to serve, and I shall provide you with loyal service until the day I find.

Baelor: Good, because I have an important job for you. From this day on, you shall help protect and teach Prince Valarr.

Valarr: What? Father? What can this man possibly teach me?

Baelor: I think this tourney taught all of us quite a bit, my boy. I think it showed us how detached the ruling houses have become from their people. How can we say that we represent the ideals of our society, to defend the weak, protect the helpless, and serve justice when we don’t even know who we are protecting? Ser Dunk seems to know that. I think you should as well.

Valarr: Father, are you thinking clearly? Perhaps you should think about it. Begging your pardon, but Ser Dunk is a lowly hedge knight.
