Maekar grunts and tries to bring his mace up to parry Baelor’s sword. His brother advances slowly, his sword slashing and thrusting at him to force him back and deny him any room to recover.

Although his armor protects him from these attacks, the prince’s momentum and technique are impossible to break, leaving Maekar no choice but to mount a clumsy defense.

Finally, he manages to catch his brother's sword in the middle of a swing and locks it with the haft of his mace. For a moment, Baelor struggles to move his sword, and Maekar sees his chance.

Grunting, he twists and pushes the haft of his weapon back and knocks its wielder aside with a powerful shove. Maekar raises his mace and prepares to strike at Baelor.

His weapon comes down, but at the last second, an axe appears and catches the weapon between its beard. It’s followed by a crackle of laughter as the weapon is forced down. Maekar tries to pull his weapon free, but gets it tangled further while Lyonel laughs and shoves him back with his shield.

Maekar tumbles to the ground, falling on his hands as his mace tumbles to the ground in front of him. Lyonel pushes it forward.

Lyonel: Here, I want this to be sporting.

Picking up the weapon, Maekar roars and swings as the Hammer and the Laughing Storm advances on him. He manages to land one hit for every three they give him, but Maekar refuses to yield. He continues to swing his weapon, battering them whenever they get close and shouting definitely.

He does not stop even when the mace rattles in its arm and its wooden haft creaks ominously. It’s drowned out by the laughter of Lyonel and the steady footsteps of Baelor.

Soon, he’s back up right to the stands, and the pair fan out, aiming to surround and finally end this battle. As his back presses against the wall, Maekar roars and suddenly springs forward. He pulls his mace behind his head and prepares to strike, but Baelor is faster, and his sword lashes out.

Maekar’s eyes widen at the sight of the blade, and he shifts his stance to try to block it. The longsword connects with the haft of his mace-

It sends the wooden handle exploding into splinters as it rips through. The prince can only stare as his blade sinks into Maekar’s neck, where his gorget does not protect him. It strikes into his neck and sends him collapsing onto the ground.

His eyes widen as blood rushes through the wound, and he drops to his knees. Baelor can only let out a startled cry as he catches his brother. Lyonel is with him and lifts the king up as he stares at Maekar.

Baelor: Brother, speak to me! Please!

He manages to open his mouth, but all that comes up is a torrent of blood that pours from his lips. Maekar shudders and twitches. The entire crowd explodes, crying out in terror as they see the prince falling before them. The two men try to staunch the bleeding as best they can, but it is too late.

In seconds, Maekar’s body goes rigid and slumps into his brother’s hands. Baelor is still in disbelief, his chest heaving as he holds his brother's body.

Baelor: N-no! No! Maekar, Maekar. Someone call a Maester.

Lyonel: My Prince. It is too late…

Baelor: I said get a Maester. Hurry!

Lyonel: My prince. He’s gone.

Baelor grips his brother's body close to his chest, feeling no pulse on his neck, and how he does not respond to his attempts to rouse him. By now, the stands go silent as everyone stares in horror at what just occurred.

The prince drops to his knees and holds his brother close to his lap as he begins to weep.

He is not sure how long he remains there, but eventually his squire and Prince Valarr come to rouse him and guide him away from the stands. But as he goes, one shout breaks the silence.

Aerion: Father! Murderer! Kinslayer!

The next few days come as a blur. He spends his time in bed, being tended by Maesters. He had taken a serious beating during the tourney, and it didn’t help that his armor was not properly fitted for him. Being his son's, it clung onto him and left him feeling every blow.
