Welcome to the Morning Power Call! This is Dr. Cheryl Clarke, psychotherapist and author of "Girl, You Cute," kicking off March with a powerful message about anxiety, narratives, and the stories we tell ourselves.
Yes, anxiety is real. But what if the anxiety you're feeling isn't about what's actually happening — it's about the story you're telling yourself about what's happening?
In this episode, we explore:
✨ Why anxiety is often tied to unresolved stories, not present facts
✨ How to audit the facts vs. the story you're creating
✨ The difference between reacting and responding
✨ Why women of color carry historical narratives that activate anxiety
✨ Mary McLeod Bethune: Strategic storytelling in the civil rights movement
✨ The V.O.I.C.E. Framework for interrupting anxious narratives
✨ Lady Bolton's powerful testimony about "sweetie" and healing
KEY TOPICS COVERED:
• The narrative we create vs. the reality we're living in
• Facts vs. interpretation, prediction, and meaning
• How past experiences hijack present moments
• The importance of strategic communication (not emotional reactivity)
• Women of color and the added layer of historical bias
• Auditing your story before it takes your power
• Mirror work: Living in reality, not in anxiety
THE STORY THAT CREATES ANXIETY:
Someone doesn't text you back for 3 hours. What story do you tell?
• "Something's wrong with me."
• "They don't want to be my friend anymore."
• "I always mess up relationships."
That's not the reality. That's the story. And the story creates anxiety.
MARY MCLEOD BETHUNE'S LEGACY:
As we enter Women's History Month (International Women's Month), Dr. Cheryl highlights Mary McLeod Bethune, an educator and civil rights leader who became one of the most powerful Black women of her era. She was an advisor to the president at a time when educated Black women "didn't exist."
THE V.O.I.C.E. FRAMEWORK FOR ANXIETY:
V — VALIDATE: "I'm anxious. My body's reactivated. My hands are sweating. I'm getting a headache." That's real. But you can't STAY there.
O — OBSERVE: What story am I telling myself right now? What narrative is trying to take my communication, trying to take my power?
I — IDENTIFY: What's the FACT that's actually happening? Does the running story correlate with the fact? Probably not.
C — CHOOSE: Do I even believe this story anymore? Or would I like to rewrite it? Is it based on facts?
E — EXPRESS: Speak strategically. Not from anxiety. Not from past wounds. From the PRESENT moment.
AUDIT YOUR STORY:
Before you react, ask yourself:
What did I ACTUALLY observe? (Without tone, without assumption, without history)
What am I DECIDING this is going to mean?
What am I TELLING myself?
What have I made the MEANING to be in this situation?
MIRROR WORK:
Look at yourself in the mirror and say:
✨ "I am living in reality."
✨ "I am living with the facts."
✨ "I am capable."
✨ "I am not what happened to me."
✨ "I separate the facts from the story."
Then move like Michelle Obama. Move like Coretta Scott King. Move like Oprah. Move like Mary McLeod Bethune.
Because Girl, You Cute! And girl, you got this.
REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS:
• What story are you telling yourself right now?
• Are you reacting to the past or responding to the present?
• What's the FACT vs. what's your INTERPRETATION?
• What unresolved story keeps showing up in your communication?
• What would happen if you audited the facts before you reacted?
