Welcome to the Morning Power Call! This is Dr. Cheryl Clarke, psychotherapist and author of "Girl You Cute," bringing you a mind-shifting episode about what we call "overthinking."
What if I told you that you're not overthinking? You're unprocessed.
In this episode, we explore:
✨ The Zeigarnik Effect: Why your brain can't stop circling back
✨ The difference between reflection and rumination
✨ Why Black women carry an added layer of overthinking
✨ Ernest Hemingway's strategy for creative breakthroughs
✨ How to close the loop and finish the stress response
✨ The V.O.I.C.E. Framework + Mirror Practice
KEY TOPICS COVERED:
• Understanding the Zeigarnik Effect (unfinished tasks stay in your brain)
• Why your brain keeps replaying conversations, rewriting arguments
• The gift of staying in the question vs. rushing to closure
• How survival mode creates hypervigilance in women of color
• The power of reflection vs. the trap of rumination
• Nervous system regulation: the 4-count breathing technique
• Mirror work: validating yourself through the overthinking loop
THE ZEIGARNIK EFFECT EXPLAINED:
Named after Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik (early 1900s), the Zeigarnik Effect describes why your brain remembers and keeps circling back to unfinished tasks. Your brain was processing in the background — and when you relaxed, the solution was trying to come through.
Ernest Hemingway used this to his advantage: he would stop mid-sentence at the end of each writing day, leaving his work incomplete. Why? Because he knew his brain would keep working on it while he slept.
THE ADDED LAYER FOR BLACK WOMEN:
Overthinking for women of color often comes with extra questions:
• Did I say too much?
• Did I come on too strong?
• Did I sound angry?
• Was I too loud?
• Was I too direct?
Why? Because historically:
• Too loud = punished
• Too emotional = labeled
• Too direct = called aggressive
• Too honest = lost opportunities
• Too angry = dismissed
You're not broken because you overthink. You've just been in survival mode. You deserve to learn how to process and move it through your body — not let it get stuck in the loops.
POWERFUL QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE:
"You're not overthinking. You're unprocessed."
"Your brain was just trying to finish something unfinished."
"Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is stay in the question."
"Questions are more important than the answers. Questions are the tools."
"You're not broken because you overthink. You've just been in survival mode."
"Overthinking locks you out. I want you to get locked in."
"Don't minimize her. Look at her and say, 'That activated me. And that's OK.'"
THE V.O.I.C.E. FRAMEWORK FOR OVERTHINKING:
V — VALIDATE yourself. Look in the mirror. "That activated me. That's OK."
O — OBSERVE the story you're telling. Are you reflecting or ruminating?
I — IDENTIFY the emotion. Embarrassed? Rejected? Scared? Powerless? Angry?
C — CHOOSE you. Breathe in for 4. Hold. Exhale.
E — EXPRESS. Regulate. Move. Close the loop.
DR. CHERYL'S PERSONAL SHARE:
"I showed up as a producer on personality tests. I produce and I need to see results. That's my makeup. I'm a solution-focused therapist — I give you the solution. I work with your strengths. But I have a bias for action. Where I had to learn: sometimes the most productive thing to do is stay in the question. Not rush to closure. Not force the answer. Stay in the productive tension of knowing the answer is going to come."
REFLECTION VS. RUMINATION:
REFLECTION asks: What can I learn from this? What moves me forward?
RUMINATION obsesses: What's wrong with me? I'm so stupid. I'm not the right person.
One opens doors. The other locks you out.
REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS:
• What have you been ruminating on that no longer serves you?
• What unfinished task keeps circling back in your mind?
• Are you reflecting or ruminating?
• What emotion are you actually feeling underneath the overthinking?
• Where does the overthinking hold in your body?
