The Meyer is one of the most common musical patterns used by galant composers in the 18th century.

As the musicologist Robert Gjerdingen demonstrates in his book Music in the Galant Style, this pattern suggests a beginning that can be traced back to a I V V I progression but can take on various nuances and peculiarities that cannot be fully grasped through functional harmony analysis.

There are, in fact, different "colorings" of this pattern, which the author calls Jupiter (from Mozart's symphony of the same name), Pastorella, and Aprile.

In this video, I analyze one of these partimentini (short yet effective partimenti) with one of my students as part of a Musicus Apprenticeship. I wrote it to help students learn how to apply the Meyer in their own compositions and improvisations.
