Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway | The House of Tomorrow Palm Springs | The Alexander Residence
In this video, I take you on a tour filmed during Modernism Week in Palm Springs inside and outside this famous landmark. I'll also show you the sales history and how the property has evolved over recent years.
1350 Ladera Circle in Palm Springs California is supposedly the most photographed home in Palm Springs. At almost anytime of the day you'll see people in front of this Palm Springs landmark property shooting selfies and videos.
Here's why 1350 Ladera Circle is so famous.
Elvis and Priscilla Presley spent their honeymoon here. Hence the name Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway. Colonel Parker leased the house for one year (for Elvis) and Elvis and Priscilla spent time other than just their honeymoon. Originally the Presley wedding was supposed to be in this house but the press got wind of it so Elvis and Priscilla flew off to Las Vegas for the wedding and then back here for the honeymoon - hence the name "Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway".
But well before 1350 Ladera Circle was known as the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway, it was famous as the House of Tomorrow.
Built in 1960 for Robert and Helen Alexander, 1350 Ladera was, and still is, an architectural masterpiece of historical significance.
Bob Alexander was one half of the father-son development duo behind the Alexander Construction Company - renowned for building many of the mid century modern homes in Palm Springs that we now refer to as "Alexanders". Many of these homes were designed by the architectural firm of Palmer and Krisel.
Which brings us to 1350 Ladera Circle in the Vista Las Palmas neighborhood of Palm Springs. On one of the best view lots in Vista Las Palmas and situated on a cul-de-sac, think of this as the developers house built by his favorite architect - William Krisel, who was empowered to create the ultimate example of mid century modern architecture. Except they didn't call it mid century modern at the time, obviously. The house is unique for its design featuring 4 circular pods on different elevations and accentuating the indoor-outdoor California lifestyle views of the San Jacinto mountains.
A feature that sets this home apart from others in the Vista Las Palmas and Old Las Palmas neighborhood is the primary bedroom is in the front of the house. It is the room you see at the front in all the pictures. Another unique feature is he built in couch in the living room.
Other features include floor to ceiling windows, clerestory windows, stone flowing from the outside to inside the house, and an abundance of light.
In 1962 Look magazine did a feature on this home and referred to it as the House of Tomorrow for its futuristic appearance. Tragically, a few years later the Bob and George Alexander died in a plane crash and the Alexander Construction Company ceased operations. While other developers and builders carried the desert modern architectural style forward, the 2200+ homes that the Alexander Construction Company built in Palm Springs will forever stand as a testament to their vision. And none more so, than 1350 Ladera Circle, the House of Tomorrow and the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway.
SALES HISTORY OF 1350 LADERA CIRCLE
As of January 2025, this home is listed for sale for by Compass for $9,275,000. This property has changed hands twice before since 2020.
1350 Ladera sold in 2020 for $2,600,000. It was in pretty rough shape then based on the pictures that were posted in the multiple listing service.
After a lot of improvements, it then sold again in 2022 for $5,650,000 making it (at that time) one of the most expensive homes ever sold in Palm Springs.
My professional opinion is that based on the historic and architectural significance and current condition, it could be valued even higher than the current list price. There is simply no other home for sale in Palm Springs even remotely like the House of Tomorrow.
