Chinese politicians and soldiers with the People’s Liberation Army honoured the more than 300,000 civilians and soldiers killed in a six-week-long massacre by Japanese forces during World War II. Japan disputes the number of victims of the mass murder and rape starting December 13, 1937, but officially admits that “the killing of a large number of non-combatants, looting and other acts occurred”. The ceremony commemorating the 84th anniversary of the wartime atrocity comes amid heightened tensions between Japan and China.
