Starting Monday, September 1st, South Carolina drivers must go hands-free behind the wheel—or face new penalties. The state’s updated distracted driving law now bans holding phones or electronic devices while driving.
For the first 6 months, violators will receive warnings. But beginning March 1, 2026, drivers will be fined:
$100 for a first offense
$200 + points on your license for a second offense within 3 years
Commercial drivers face even stricter penalties, including possible CDL suspension.
Exceptions include:
Use of voice-activated commands
If the vehicle is parked
Emergency calls
Authorities say the goal is to reduce crashes and save lives.
