Emergency situations such as virus outbreaks like the Covid-19 pandemic and natural disasters such as floods make systems vulnerable to corruption. South Africa has learned many lessons from the Special Investigating Unit’s Covid-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) investigations. The lessons include live tracking of procurement processes. These lessons were applied when KwaZulu Natal Province faced floods in April 2022. Adv. Andy Mothibi, Head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) of South Africa, gives more details on addressing and preventing corruption in emergencies and crises.
