Yesterday's commemoration of Human Rights Day in Sharpeville got off to an ugly start. This after an SABC broadcast was affected by a scuffle between factions, alleged to belong to the Pan Africanist Congress. The PAC led by the late Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe is largely credited for the anti-pass marches in Langa and Sharpeville, on 21 March 1960. The ill-fated protests claimed the lives of 69 people and left many others injured. While 27 February marked the fortieth anniversary of the death of Sobukwe, debates continue regarding the role that he played in the country's struggle for freedom.
