Situations that need EC:

05:30 Dark subjects, very bright subjects, dark subjects against bright BG, bright subjects against dark BG, window light portraits and creative shots

EC required in all the exposure modes…particularly Semi Auto modes like Av,Tv, P
EC can be set in Manual modes also when the ISO is set Auto.

Dark subjects: Shooting black subject filling the frame, needs minus exposure compensation to get the black right.

Very bright subjects: Shooting bright subject filling the frame, needs plus exposure compensation to get the white right.

Dark subjects against bright BG (particularly in Evaluative or matrix meter modes) needs plus exposure compensation.

Bright subjects bright subject against dark BG (particularly in Evaluative or matrix meter modes) needs minus exposure compensation.

Window light portraits (particularly in Evaluative or matrix meter modes) needs minus exposure compensation.

Artistic shoots like a Sunset or Sunrise needs a minus compensation to show the colours saturated.
