Hon. Luis A. Lavin (Ret.) joins JAMS after a distinguished 22-year judicial career that includes nine years on the California Court of Appeal and 13 years on the Los Angeles Superior Court. During his appellate service, he authored more than 750 opinions addressing arbitration, class certification, business disputes, insurance coverage, employment discrimination, and land use matters.

As a trial judge, Justice Lavin presided over more than 100 bench and jury trials and was assigned to a complex litigation department handling CEQA and Coastal Act challenges, corporate governance disputes, and public employment cases. His earlier career includes significant public service roles, including with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, as well as experience in the entertainment industry as associate general counsel for the Directors Guild of America.

Fluent in Spanish and deeply committed to education and fairness, Justice Lavin brings extensive judicial insight, broad subject matter expertise, and a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach to his ADR practice.
