Through photos and other images, this presentation illuminates Canadian prohibition and policy over a century. In order to understand drug policy today, significant events in Canadian drug prohibition history are represented and explored: from past to present.
Bio:
Susan Boyd, University of Victoria Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Human & Social Development, is the author of Hooked: Drug Films in Britain, Canada, and the US; From Witches to Crack Moms: Women, Drug Law, and Policy; Mothers and Illicit Drugs: Transcending the Myths; co-author of Killer Weed: Marijuana Grow Ops, Media, and Justice; and Raise Shit! Social Action Saving Lives; and co-editor of With Child: Substance Use During Pregnancy: A Woman-Centred Approach. She collaborates with harm reduction and drug user organizations and is a member of the steering committee, Canadian Drug Policy Coalition.
NOTE: The presenter noted these two errors: Chinese labourers in Vancouver (not Canada) were designated by the city to live in the Chinese quarter (Chinatown). And Colonel Sharman held his position of Chief, Division of Narcotic Control, for almost 20 years.
