Anticipatory it uses “it” as a dummy subject to prepare for the real subject that comes later.
👉 The real subject is usually:
to-infinitive clause
that-clause
-ing clause (less common)
It is difficult to explain the rule.

🔹 Structure
It + verb / adjective + (for/of + object) + real subject
🔹 Examples
It is important to study regularly.(Real subject: to study regularly)
It surprised me that she won.(Real subject: that she won)
It is fun learning English.(Real subject: learning English)

2️⃣ It-Extraposition
🔹 What it is
It-extraposition is a sentence transformation process:
A heavy subject clause is moved to the end
“It” replaces it in subject position
👉 So, extraposition creates anticipatory it sentences.
🔹 Basic transformation
[Heavy subject] + verb → It + verb + [heavy subject]
To explain the rule is difficult → It is difficult to explain the rule.

🔹 Examples (Before → After)
To learn a new language is challenging.→ It is challenging to learn a new language.
That he lied was obvious.→ It was obvious that he lied.
1️⃣ It is strange that she didn’t call.= That she didn’t call is strange.
2️⃣ It was hard to believe his story.= To believe his story was hard.
3️⃣ It is necessary for you to attend the meeting.= For you to attend the meeting is necessary.
