Natural American Spirit is an additive-free brand that was first introduced in 1982 by SFNTC, and throughout the 1990's, it slowly started to rise in popularity. Then, in 2002, RJ Reynolds bought the brand for $340 million dollars, and since that point, it’s exploded in popularity.

Today, inside the United States, NAS is much more popular than not, and is the largest additive-free brand by far, and is currently produced in North Carolina by the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of RJR. Outside of the United States, however, the nameplate is produced by Japan Tobacco, who purchased the international rights to the brand in 2015 for $5 billion dollars.
