This is the first lecture from the course Chem 51C Organic Chemistry taught by David Van Vranken at UC Irvine in Fall 2020. More than half of this video involves the course syllabus. Then I talk ractopamine as a food additive for show animals. Then I move into the course content, talking about five key transformations involving electrophilic aromatic substitution: halogenation, nitration, Friedel-Crafts acylation, sulfonation, and Friedel-Crafts alkylation. I discuss the general mechanism for electrophilic substitution of aromatic protons through an arenium ion intermediate.
