Since the start of Rock Report at the beginning of this year, we have received a lot of demos. Some appeared out of nowhere and disappeared again. Other demos stood out for some reason. But until now we have not received a single demo that sounded as strong as that of the American group TOUR DE FORCE. It's really no exaggeration if we call this demo a gem. Geffen has also recently realized this, because they have offered this T.D.F. a so-called development deal. Fantastic! The New York group has been operating since August of 1988. Wherever the group goes, the halls are packed. The 7-track demo shows why. These songs are truly the cream of the crop. A bad track is nowhere to be found. Nor is it possible with such material in the style of Aviator and Journey. "Tonite" opens in genuine Tradia style. "Back To You" is a sensitive song with sublime vocals. "Coming Home" proves that once again. That Chali just has a sublime voice. But keyboard player Alex is also the focus of attention. That man plays the keys like no other. Crazy! On "Hold On" Chali strikes again mercilessly. "If It's Over" starts out like Paul Janz' "Believe In Me", but after just a few notes it starts to lead its own life. This song contains some well thought out guitar parts. Christian definitely knows how to play a guitar. The penultimate track "Sweet Adeline" is anything but sweet. The least 'best' track (as a reminder: there are absolutely no bad songs on this demo) is the last one: "Stranger In The Night" (no, not Frank Sinatra's). This song is definitely good enough as a party song, but if we may give some criticism - it lacks the conviction and charisma of all previous, colossal pieces. For the first time, Chali also shines a little less.
The American West Coast may be the most fun, but there's a lot more talent brewing on the East Coast. New York is outperforming L.A. on this front.

You can find these 7 songs from this Demo Tape on Tour De Force's "World On Fire" Album. Originally released by Long Island Records in 1995. Opener “Tonight” penned by Michael Bolton and originally exclusive to the 1995 Japanese version.
Tour De Force came to the attention of many AOR lovers in 1988, when a first of their legendary demos was released. Because of the impact those tapes had on the AOR fraternity, the band was able to sign a development deal with Geffen. But the band was dropped from the label after they had signed Nirvana and Warrior Soul. Still the band was able to get a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell that enabled them to keep writing, recording and eventually releasing that long-awaited debut album. TDF eventually scored a record deal with Active Records (an offshoot of Music For Nations), that released the band's self-titled album in 1993. As it contained more contemporary hard rock material, it disappointed the fans (including me), who - en masse - asked for material in the vein of the renowned initial demos. However, the fans had to wait until 1995 before that material was finally released by Long Island Records. As a matter of fact, it was a compilation of the band's remastered demos, but that didn't bother me nor my other AOR brothers. Especially the first half of the material on offer was (and still is) breathtaking, with world class gems like "Tonight" (written by Michael Bolton), "Back To You", "Coming Home" (ballad), "Hold On", "If It's Over", "Sweet Adeline" etc. etc. It's finally Digitally remastered in 2011 by Chris Lyne, this 8th reissue in AOR Heaven's Classix series is an absolute must for all younger fans of the rediscovered AOR genre !!!
