Oil Painting Tutorial - Step 2 - Sketch the Shapes - Composition - Ocean Cliffs at Sunset. Here's a tip about oil painting ocean cliffs, waves, rocks, and a stormy sky while the sun is setting. This is how I sketch in the main shapes as I determine the composition of the shapes in the painting. This is the second step in a 15 step process that I will cover in-depth with a video each week.
Members will notice quickly from the videos that I rarely sketch anything with line drawings. I began early on during art school to jump right in with large shapes of colors or values to block-in my paintings. But, occasionally, some quick placement lines can be helpful. Rather than a detailed compositional rendering, the lines are simple and easily changed.
There are two main reasons I might use lines:
1. When I have a definite image in my mind of where I want the major design elements, I will sometimes put down some temporary lines. That helps keep me from getting lost during the exuberance of painting in the large color shapes.
2. When I am dealing with specific and complicated architectural shapes. When I was commissioned to paint the childhood home of a family in California, I drew in the perspective lines before I started painting. There were so many Spanish arches and details I wanted to paint them with exactness.

These colors and techniques generally apply equally well with oil or acrylic paint.

Most of my landscape painting is alla prima or wet on wet and created from plein air studies, imagination and digital reference photos.
