Various touches on this fine ring of eight, filmed 2nd August 2022 on The Lilliputters Guild's Summer Tour. The ringing featured here includes Bob Minimus on the back 4 (whilst waiting for the remainder of the group to turn up), rounds and call changes, and forwards-backwards jump-changes, filmed from outside (where the bells sound their best).
The town of Caerphilly (whose Welsh name, Caerffili, translates as "the fort (caer) of Ffili") is an ancient town, fortified by the Romans in AD 75. A later, medieval, castle (begun in 1268) still stands today, and is the largest castle in Wales. Whilst famous for this, and its cheese, we sadly got to sample neither of these, although the Welsh weather lived up to its billing by chucking down with rain during our time here.
St Martin's church - described by Sir John Betjeman as being “large and dignified” - was built in 1878-9, to replace an older building; it is Grade II listed, and known by some as “The Cathedral of the Valleys”. The tower was constructed in 1910, and equipped with a fine ring of eight bells, cast by John Taylor & Co of Loughborough. The bells were donated by Miss Catherine Anthony, a great benefactress of the church. Whilst well-known locally for their tone, they were somewhat of a let-down inside, being very quiet and not very punchy, although outside they are superb. Nonetheless, they felt well-kept, and the ringing chamber was very smart. The clock dates from 1911, and was made by Niehus Bros. of Bristol (electrified in 1980 and rebuilt in 2000 by J.B. Boyce & Co; it doesn't half make a racket!).
