Take teacher evaluations and the notorious RateMyProfessors.com as an example.

It’s never been more important to have good teachers in higher education – as costs skyrocket, enrollment is consistently lower for everyone except top-tier schools, and student satisfaction is increasingly used to measure the financial future of colleges and universities.

So how do we figure out who the great teachers are? And how do colleges and universities find them, keep them, and encourage them?

Well student evaluations are one of the most important… and meaningless tools used today to discover great teachers.

They’re poorly designed, often harmful, rarely helpful, and usually misunderstood.

Opinions swing wildly from “Why don’t my awesome evaluations help me more?” to “What do they know – they’re just kids and I have the Ph.D.!”

Add to that the disruption known as RateMyProfessor, and we’re all confused about student evaluations. Are they important? Can they help me as a teacher? And can they hurt me??

So let’s take a quick look at student evaluations, how they’re used, what they mean, and especially for newcomers to teaching, for adjuncts and part-time and temps in higher ed today, how they can help or hurt us.
