So I hear the phrase “emotional intelligence” (EQ) being thrown around in business very loosely. It has become a bit of a Chinese whispers scenario where it’s starting to lose its true meaning.
What is Emotional Intelligence and why is it important in business...
EQ is a an academic construct that was brought to the real world by Daniel Goleman.
1) Intrinsic and Extrinsic: it’s important to realise that it’s about the ability to spot emotions within others and more important within ourselves.
2) 4 levels: perception of emotion, spotting the emotion rise and fall in us and others; use of emotion, how we deal with it; understanding emotion, what were the antecedents; managing emotions, being reflective and regulating emotions to trigger future performance (Mayer & Salovey, 1997)
3) Difficult to measure: how does a company find out how emotionally intelligent an individual is? EQ is difficult to measure, questionnaires and observations can be open to bias leaving emotional intelligence levels questionable.
4) Thrown around lightly: emotional intelligence has become a buzz word, it may sound good but it’s easy to confuse its meaning.
