Force Fetch Tutorial for JGHV Dog Owners - Day 14: Intro to Game with Deutsch Drahthaar

Training Session Summary: I took advantage of the nice weather (no wind!!) and expanded free time on a Sunday to do an extra long training session with Liesel today. We had a lot of material to review and a few new things I have been wanting to introduce. We actually spent about 45 minutes total training today, which is much longer than usual. But at this point in the training, you can see that Liesel is enjoying the additional time spent as she learns new subjects. Today’s training session has been separated into 4 separate videos to better organize the content into easily viewable sections.

Section #2 Video – Introduction to Wild (Thawed) Game: Now that I am confident that Liesel understands the “fetch” command and holds/retrieves dummies nicely, it was time to introduce her to her first wild game. In this case, I chose a (thawed) squirrel for her to hold/retrieve. Whenever we introduce a dog to a new piece of game, it is important to back all the way up to the beginning steps of force fetch. So, I ask Liesel to take the squirrel from my hand, and then the ground, before eventually working her up to making about a 30m retrieve.
