"When I visit museums, I don't use headphones because I like to experience exhibitions in my own little world. But it was interesting how the whole project was put together tonight, and I also liked that the material was not only in Hungarian but also in English. In addition, this new concept allowed me to switch in the menu between music related to heaven and hell. Both fit perfectly with the atmosphere of the exhibition. I really like the entire concept.”

STORYLINE:
This might look like a dancefloor you would normally find in a nightclub, with purple and pink lights and people moving to a beat.

But here, it's eerily quiet.

This is a silent disco inside the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, where visitors dance and walk through galleries wearing wireless headphones, surrounded by the works of English artist and poet William Blake.

The event, titled “Blake the Silence”, took place on 10 January as the final night of the exhibition The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: William Blake and His Contemporaries.

Organisers say it's the first time a silent disco has been held inside the museum.

The exhibition explores the work of William Blake, who lived from 1757 to 1827 and is known for combining poetry, image and symbolism into a single artistic language.

Blake was a poet, painter and printmaker, and is especially recognised for his illuminated books, where text and images were printed together from engraved plates.

His work often dealt with themes of imagination, spirituality, politics and moral opposites.

Those ideas that are key to The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, one of his most influential texts.

Blake believed that opposing forces such as reason and desire, or heaven and hell, were necessary for human creativity and progress.

Exhibition curator Csilla Regős says Blake’s work continues to invite reinterpretation.

Regős says the silent disco format reflects Blake’s belief that different art forms should not be separated.

The exhibition places Blake within the artistic world of his time, showing works by his contemporaries alongside his own prints, drawings and books.
