Although the European ‘witch craze’ didn’t really get going until the end of the Middle Ages, the early myths surrounding sorcery and witchery sprang up in the 14th century. As medieval society changed and its moral boundaries shifted, the Late Middle Ages became the perfect breeding ground for believing in the widespread use of witchcraft. Let’s face it, in the Middle Ages, the main concern in Europe was religion.

To Medieval scholars, beliefs and practises that were outside Christian doctrine were a challenge to the authority of the Church, a challenge to social norms and therefore a threat to the majesty of God himself. Then came the inquisitors, the demonologists and the witch-hunters... Welcome to Medieval Madness!
