This video shows the idea of drone based autonomous inspection of infrastructures, such as giant boilers, bridges and buildings. The goal of inspection is getting real-time visual feedback while robot autonomously following a path that guarantees a full coverage of the object surface. For the purpose of demonstration, the robot in the video is following a simple predefined path autonomously.
The drone is carrying various types of sensors including cameras, optical flow sensor, barometer, inertial measurement unit and laser range finders and powerful processor which enables our algorithm running online and give feedback in real-time.
On the algorithm level, we developed efficient laser based localization software to help the robot figure out where it is. And there is a controller takes the current position as input and generates commands to the robot such that it always follows the desired trajectory.
