I am the mondina of the toiling masses(Centre-north)
From the concert "La donna nella cultura popolare” (Women in popular culture) by the Italian Folk Ensemble - Adelaide, Australia 2nd November 2019. Performance of traditional and popular songs of the Italian people.
The Italian Folk Ensemble (Adelaide) has been for over 40 years, studying and performing traditional and popular songs and dances of the Italian people, fully respecting their individual musical style and their cultural context. These songs cover a wide spectrum of emotions and experiences of the people of Italy through the ages, and as such, they are a unique medium to learn Italian culture and history.
By Pietro Besate, member of the PCI (Italian Communist Party), for a congress held around 1950. The music belongs to a popular rice-field song: “La rondinella, mid 1800’s”. Collected on several occasions, by various informants; this version was recorded by Cesare Bermani in Milan in 1964, at Caprara’s home. The last verse refers to the political campaigns of the PCI for peace, in the 1950s.
Coi nostri corpi sulle rotaie,
noi abbiam fermato i nostri sfruttator;
per la pace, il pane e per la libertà;
e più forti dei cannoni noi sarem;
vogliam la pace sulla terra,
e più forti dei cannoni noi sarem.
I am the mondina of the toiling masses
I am the proletarian who never flinched:
they killed me, chained me,
prison and violence, nothing stopped me.
With our bodies on the rail tracks,
we stopped our exploiters;
there may be a lot of mud in the rice fields,
but it does not stain the symbol of the toilers.
We will fight for work,
for peace, bread and for freedom;
and we will create a new world,
of justice and new customs.
This glorious and beautiful flag,
we have embraced and we will bring it forth,
from the Vercellese* to Molinella*,
at the head of our lads.
Should someone want to craft a war,
united we will stop it: we want peace on earth.
and stronger than the cannons we will be. [x 2]
