White Cart Way Walk6: commences at Shawlands railway station and heads down Pollokshaws Road and takes a L into the very small Rossendale Park.
For visitors travelling from Glasgow City centre, Shawlands station is on the ‘Cathcart Circle’, a frequent service from Glasgow Central Railway Station. From there It is less than a 5 minute walk to the Haggs Road entrance of Pollok Country Park - but in this particular walk, the route enters PCP via the Pollokshaws railway viaduct via ….
Rossendale Park is a local community park and is a green space managed by the community, who have been working on improvements like new playgrounds, benches, and planting.
Once through the Park, Walk6 then continues up to Shawhill Park (Barney’s - as it used to be locally called). Another small park, Shawhill is known for its “Tiny Forest". A steep site to access - but with views over the city and the hills to the west. It was said …
“Around 1,800 native trees will be planted by ‘Wee Foresters’ in three areas the size of tennis courts. Capable of attracting over 500 animal and plant species within the first three years, the forests will be looked after by volunteer Tree Keeper Teams and nearby schools will use them for outdoor learning.”
Only one such forest area was completed though.
The walk then heads downhill and passes a couple of detailed murals, created by Mack Colours - welcome to PollokJaws! (Pollokshaws).
And if you haven’t watched the Jaws movies then the recent movie Beast of War is loosely based on the real-life sinking of the HMAS Armidale corvette in 1942 when a Japanese fighter sunk the Australian warship in the Timor Sea. Clinging to a makeshift raft, a handful of soldiers soon find themselves in a desperate fight for survival as a great white shark circles in the water. The film is loosely based on the real-life sinking of the said HMAS Armidale corvette. Reference to this war incident was made in the Jaws movie.
The walk heads to Pollokshaws Road, crosses at the traffic lights, then heads under the viaduct then down to the riverbank of the White Cart Water to see the local residents amongst the iced-up water before continuing into PCP along the WCW and into the woodlands for brunch.
Smoked salmon omelette on the Triad stove in the woodland setting. After some more woodland walking dinner was Curried Haggis Bon Bons with a hot and spicy twist rolled in a poppadum style crumb served with mash - then onto the Burrell Collection.
The video ends with a couple of pics of a lunar rainbow visible in the Glasgow southside sky above the WCW. The halo occurs when ice crystals in high, thin cirrus clouds refract the moon light, signifying that cold and stormy weather is nearby. And it was.
