White Cart Way Walk5 commences in Pollokshaws at the bus stop outside Lidl (toilet facilities for customers) on Riverford Road. This can be reached from Glasgow City centre by First Bus number 3 (not the McGills bus number 3!). The walk then turns into Riverbank Street along the side of Lidl. Stop opposite Kirk Lane Burial ground and look across to the Pollokshaws Coat of Arms on Kirk Lane cemetery gate and railings.
This is the coat of arms of the Burgh of Pollokshaws. The arms are derived from those of the Maxwell family of Pollok, influential landowners in the area, with the addition of an oak tree which is a reference to the word "shaws", meaning "woods". There is a Latin motto associated with the coat of arms, Labor vincit - "work overcomes".
Cross the road and enter the cemetery by the gates that are permanently unlocked. This is the final resting place of Elizabeth 'Betty' Burns who was the illegitimate daughter of the poet Robert Burns and Anna Park. She married John Thomson in 1808, a soldier and later a handloom weaver. Betty Burns died in 1873 and is buried in the Thomson family lair.
The music to this opening sequence is “Ae Fond Kiss" the famous 1791 song by her father Scottish poet Robert Burns. (Performed by Dougie McLean). Burns had 12 children altogether, about five of them outside of marriage!
Once in PCP the walks heads into the woods to once again locate the tree stump carving then heads to the Scottish Police Dog Memorial, a sculpture of a Belgian Malinois, then another look at the nearby Pollok Highland Cattle again.
Next, the walk passes the memorial bench that is part of the Scottish national COVID-19 memorial dedicated to all who died during the pandemic.
The walk then heads round to the riverside where a monument on the south wall of Pollok House gardens commemorates and pays tribute to 58 men from Nether Pollok Estate who served in WW1.
Breakfast alongside the White Cart Water opposite Pollok House consisted of freshly toasted and buttered pancakes and a cuppatea.
Later, as usual, a quick walkabout the Burrell Collection begins by passing the Warwick Vase (2nd century). Found in the villa of the Emperor Hadrian outside Rome, the Warwick Vase was restored and gifted to the Earl of Warwick in 1774. Later it found its way to this Collection where nowadays 6,000 years of art and history await exploration.
Too tired to walk there? Then a free bus service from just inside the Pollokshaws Road entrance is available. Once under and though Pollokshaws Viaduct the bus stop is on the L in Pollok Avenue. The Burrell shuttle bus is a free, electric bus that runs in a circular route within Pollok Country Park, connecting the park's main entrance at 2060 Pollokshaws Road to the Burrell Collection and Pollok House. It operates daily from approximately 10:00 AM to 6:15 PM, with a 20-30 minute loop, and is wheelchair accessible.
(Note, there are toilet facilities at the Burrell- and even areas set aside where you eat your own food. Indeed, visitors can bring their own food to enjoy at the designated picnic spots, with five indoor picnic areas available in the museum for rainy days, and picnic tables located in the large outdoor space. Shop, cafe and restaurant facilities as you would expect).
After that Walk5 heads to the PCP barbecue area for a cheddar cheeseburger cooked in a takeaway foil tin with two Godora tabs. Served with a cuupa pepperment leafs. 😀🍴 Smokeless and residue-free solid firelighters, easy to ignite and long burning time and can be stored for more than 10 years without evaporation!
roddymckoutdoors White Cart Way Walks are cook-trekking walkabouts along and within the route of the White Cart Water wherein the Kingfisher waymarked White Cart Way follows a four-mile path from Pollok House in Pollok Country Park to Holmwood House. With so much to explore in Pollok Country Park and surrounding areas it easy to start the walk at different points to see various southside significant and some historical sites of interest along, within and nearby the Way.
The White Cart Way is a waymarked Kingfisher of a walk😄
