Real Life is an iconic Australian new wave and synth-pop band formed in Melbourne in the early 1980s. They blended catchy synth hooks, atmospheric keyboards, and emotive vocals, emerging from the post-punk/new wave scene with a polished, electronic sound reminiscent of acts like Duran Duran or Depeche Mode, but with a distinctly Aussie edge.
They achieved their biggest success with the timeless hit "Send Me an Angel" (1983), which became a global new wave anthem, charting internationally (including No. 29 on the US Billboard Hot 100) and even re-charting later in remixed forms.
Paired with "Catch Me I'm Falling", it defined their early sound.
Focusing on their first three vinyl albums from the 1980s:
Heartland (1983, debut album on Wheatley Records)
Their breakthrough release and the one that put them on the map. This classic synth-pop/new wave record features the massive singles "Send Me an Angel" and "Catch Me I'm Falling," alongside other standout tracks like "Always" and "Like a Gun." It's full of shimmering synths, driving rhythms, and romantic, yearning lyrics—peak early-80s electronic pop with huge hooks. It charted well in Australia (top 30) and gained international traction.
Flame (1985)
Their sophomore effort built on the debut's synth-driven style but added a bit more polish and variety. It includes tracks like "Face to Face" (a notable single) and kept the new wave/synth energy alive while evolving slightly toward a broader pop-rock feel. Released on Wheatley, it was solid but didn't match the debut's massive breakout success.
Down Comes the Hammer (1986)
The third album saw a shift with lineup changes (keyboardist Richard Zatorski replaced by Steve Williams) and a slightly darker, more industrial-tinged edge in places, while still rooted in synth-pop. It explored heavier themes and production, reflecting the mid-80s transition in electronic music. Less commercially dominant than Heartland, but a key part of their 80s catalog.
Real Life perfectly captured that Australian 80s synth wave vibe—think pub rock energy meets electronic experimentation in the land down under. Their vinyl releases are sought-after by collectors for that warm analog sound!#reallife
