Ryan: How's it going Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today, on our 2010 Jeep Wrangler, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles. Now the purpose of the wiring is to transfer the lighting signals from the back of your motor home to the back of your Jeep. That's not only going to keep you legal, but it's going to allow other motorists to know what your intentions are as you go down the road. Now one thing I like about this kit is that it's going to have built in diodes, which are going to protect your Jeep's factory wiring if a short or an electrical issue we're to occur on your motor home side. Now the wiring is going to come pre-attached at the front end with a four pole flat connector. Now what I recommend doing, like we did on our Jeep, is actually upgrading to a six way round connector like we have here. And that's just going to give you a little more options to run other accessories like a charge line kit for example.
And it's just going to be a little easier to make that connection from the front of the Jeep to the back of your motor home.As far as the lighting functions that we're going to get from the back of the motor home to the back of the Jeep will be our brake lights, our left turn signal, our right turn signal, and our running lights. Now keep in mind our wiring is just one of five main components needed to flat tow our Jeep down the road. The other four are going to include your base plate, your tow bar, a braking system, as well as safety cables. Our base plate is going to provide us with a solid connection point for our tow bar to attach to. The tow bar is going to come from our base plate and that's going to connect to our motor home. Our safety cables are going to go from our motor home to our base plate and these are going to be there as a secondary device or backup.
If a catastrophic disconnect does happen, this'll still keep our Jeep connected to our motor home. And the wiring; that's going to transfer all of the motor home's lighting signals from the back of the motor home to the back of our Jeep. Now as far as the installation goes, it does more or less just plug into our factory wiring, so it is going to be relatively straight forward and shouldn't take you a whole lot of time. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and hook it up together now. To begin our install, we're going to be here at the back of the Jeep. We're going to need to remove our tail lights.
To get our tail lights out, we're going to have two screws here on the inside of the light and so I'll take those out using a Phillips screwdriver. You can see we have the screws out, we can grab our tail light, work it around and pull it out.Now at this point we can disconnect our wiring from the tail light. We're going to have a tab here in the center, push down on it, and then you're able to separate the two. I'll set the tail light aside and then repeat that same process to get the passenger side removed. Now what we're going to do is take our new wiring, we're going to take the end here that has this four pole flat on it as well as the T connector with the orange and green wiring.
There's going to be an opening at the bottom of our tail light pocket down there. That'll allow us to drop it down to the bottom side of our Jeep. We'll take all those, fish it down through there. Then just grab that and work all that wiring down through here. Now with all of that wiring dropped down to the bottom side of our Jeep, we can plug in our T connector here that has the red and blue and the yellow and brown wires. Now our Jeep has some trailer wiring ran already, so there's a T connector in place. This would work the exact same way if this T connector wasn't here and you just had your factory light connector. What we're going to do is take our T connector and just plug it right into this one. Before we do that, we'll take some of the included dielectric grease and just smear it over the terminals. That'll just help prevent any corrosion or anything like that. Now what I'm going to do is just use a couple of the included zip ties and wrap it around our box and we're going to be able to find a piece of metal inside of the tail light pocket that we can secure it to. I'll go ahead and do that now and then I'll show you what it looks like. This is what the box looks like once I have
