Rob: Hey everybody, Rob at etrailer.com and today we're going to be taking a look at the Roadmaster High Powered Diode Wiring Kit on our 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL unlimited. Now you do want to keep in mind this is only going to be one component of a complete flat tow setup. For our Jeep, we're going to need a base plate, wiring, a tow bar, a braking system and safety cables. So we've got our Jeep hooked up to our motor home and you can see that our lights are working in unison and that's because our diodes are going to allow the signal from our motor home to be transferred to our Jeep's tail lights. That way we can safely and securely get down the road because whether we need to slow down or change lanes, we need to have the signals back here just like if we're towing a trailer. That way when we are going down the highway, we go to change lanes and nobody has to look past our Jeep to see the signal because it's going to be all the way back here at the very back. Now there are a few different options of getting those signals to the back of your Jeep. And I really think that diodes are going to be the best solution because we could use magnetic lights like a lot of us have seen in the past, but that's going to bring up a couple more problems.
We're going to have to find a metal surface to stick to because most of the tops in our Jeeps are going to be fiberglass. So that's one thing we're going to have to alleviate. Not to mention, every time we want to tow, we're going to have to put them on, run the wire to the back of the motor home, and then that's going to be dangling, hitting in the wind, potentially scratching the paint. But with the diodes, it's a one time install. Once they're in, we don't have to do anything extra besides hook up our tow bar and other components for our flat tow. Not to mention it's not going to change anything in the outside of our Jeep.
I really like the way the Jeep looks and personally if I had one I wouldn't want to change a whole lot. Our diodes are going to keep that same factory look so nobody even know that they're there. Now one of the biggest things I really like about our diodes is the fact they are going to protect our Jeeps wiring. If there was a problem on the motor home end, our diodes are going to prevent any kind of back feeding so we don't have to worry about the electrical system. Now I do know a lot of customers when it comes to cutting and splicing wires, that is a little nerve wracking. And our diodes are going to require us to cut into our factory taillight wiring so we can use the tail light itself.
But it's a very straightforward process. In fact, we can do it together and we'll go through how to test each function and make sure you cut the wire properly and get everything installed. So let's go ahead and bring it to the shop and we can do it together. To begin installation, I always recommend starting on the front of your Jeep and routing your wires starting at the point you want your plug to be mounted. Now we just got done putting our base plate on. So before we put our skid plate and everything back on, we started our wires up here because our skid plate is actually going to take up all this space and we've got to have room for our wires to come through.
Now I also cut a four-pole end off because we're not going to be using it and it's also going to make it easier for the wires to come through an access hole so we can mount our plug up. The next step would be to route your wires all the way towards the back of the tail lights. So we'll go ahead and show you the route we took and how we got them back there. So we run our wires towards the driver's side of the frame rail. Then once we got to the edge here, I actually sent it over to the top of the frame rail and sent it back. And the main reason is just because we have a lot of moving components right here and you want to stay as far away as you can, but we went over the top of the frame and then if you look above the axle, we had it dropped back down. There's a small hole that's right by one of the engine mounds here. We actually fished our wire into the frame and then started running along inside the frame here. Now if we come to the inside, there's a lot of different access holes that are running along the frame here and most of this
