Spending the Second Sunday of Lent with the gradual re-birth of Nicodemus is meant to be an encouragement to us whose faith goes through periods of confusion and doubt as well as trust and assurance.
Nicodemus eventually becomes quite a radical follower of Jesus—but it’s a slow journey! Their first meeting is all we usually read about (John 3:1-17)…and on that occasion Nicodemus is unsettled, and full of unresolved questions. So we’ll take a sneak peek at the two other truly tiny re-appearances of Nicodemus in John’s Gospel (John 7:45-52 and 19:38-42,) to see the truly amazing journey that encountering Jesus takes this rabbi on.
In the gracious hands of God, Nicodemus becomes a pioneer Pharisees who becomes a follower of Jesus…according to Acts 15 where at an early council of the church Pharisees make up one of the largest contingents among of early Christians …not generally the way we think of the Pharisees when we ready if the initial “run-ins” with Jesus from our focus on the gospels!
