This is not only the number of days in Lent — it is the key to understanding this penitential season.
In the Bible, the number 40 appears whenever a great change is taking place.
Noah endured 40 days of flood rains before a new creation emerged.
Moses fasted 40 days on Mount Sinai and received God’s Law.
Israel spent 40 years in the wilderness to purify their hearts.
Elijah walked 40 days to Mount Horeb and encountered God in silence.
And of course, Jesus fasted 40 days in the desert before beginning his ministry.
Needless to say, 40 is an important number.
And today, the Church spends 40 days in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as a remedy for our souls.
If all of these monumental changes were marked by a period of 40 days, imagine how much Christ could change our hearts this Lent.
