Small-boat crossings reached a three-year high in 2025, with 41,472 people arriving in the UK, up from 35,816 (2024) and 29,437 (2023). Critics, including Nigel Farage, said this undermines Labour’s promise to “smash the gangs” behind people-smuggling. The one-in, one-out return deal with France saw 193 people sent back and 195 arrive. The government has also announced tougher asylum reforms, but they are not yet law.
