GoPro HERO2 Unbrick and Downgrade Method - Firmware Bugs in v222

The GoPro HERO2 firmware version v198 added Protune, but had freezing and bricking issues as well as the "one button on" bug. The version v222 released in January, 2013 also has bugs including a "one button on" bug which happens less often, but still happens.

Downgrading from v198 to v124 or v70 worked with the manual method of holding the shutter button when power on the camera, but when you try this downgrade when already on v222, you might get a bricked camera that won't record or turn off properly.

This video shows how to restore firmware version v222 or any other version to your HERO2 via Cineform Studio on a PC (Mac version won't work apparently), but you must follow all the steps shown in this video, or it will probably fail.

UPDATE: I first made this video not knowing how to get any other version other than v222 on the camera and working. I have added annotations along the way explaining how to get any version working, including v124 listed below.

If your Cineform reports your camera still has v222 on it and won't offer an update, and your camera freezes when you turn it on and you can't manually try a downgrade, put this "version.txt" file in the MISC folder on your SD card, replacing the one that is already on your SD card. Make sure to unzip this file before you place it on your memory card. This will trick Cineform into thinking your camera has v70 of the firmware on your camera and will offer to do an update.
