Another look at Britain and it's social history rewinding back over the past 50 years.
Step back in time with me to the 1970s (and a little into the 1980s), and rediscover how we used to shop—and how different everyday life once felt.
This was a time before sell-by dates ruled the shelves, before everything came wrapped in plastic, and before supermarkets took over. Our high streets were alive and bustling: independent shops, busy butchers, greengrocers with fruit and veg sold loose, and markets full of noise, colour, and character.
We’d cut coupons out of magazines to save a few pennies. Buses would roll into town on a Saturday, packed with shoppers. Cafés were full, markets were thriving, and meat sellers would auction off cuts right in front of a crowd. The streets felt busy, social, and full of life.
In this video, we look back fondly at all those everyday sights and sounds from the 1970s—and some from the early 80s—that have quietly disappeared. It’s a nostalgic journey through a way of shopping, and a way of living, that many of us still remember with real affection.
