As part of my British social history, here is another video
In today’s video, I’m going back to the 1970s to revisit life on the council estate — and the unwritten rules and etiquette that shaped how we were raised.
This is all about the standards our parents taught us to live by:
Don’t answer the door on a Friday — it might be the rent man.
Always call adults Mr. and Mrs., never by their first names.
Be first in the queue at the jumble sale… and last at the fish and chip shop, just in case they’re giving something away.
These little rules might sound funny now, but they helped build a real sense of community, respect, and shared values. From neighbourly habits to the secret nicknames parents had for people on the street, this video looks at the humour, warmth, and character of growing up in that era.
Did your parents have similar rules or sayings?
Did you grow up with the same kind of council estate etiquette?
Let me know in the comments — I’d love to hear your stories and memories.
